One of the bills that we’ve had enough of is Senate Bill 732. Claiming to be champions of women’s health, Pennsylvania legislators who are proponents of the bill have been pushing the idea that abortion providers should be governed under Ambulatory Surgical Facility regulations. However, the real implications of this bill are much different than they’d like you to believe.
SB 732 would require health centers that provide any abortion care to be equipped with an elevator big enough to move a Chevy Volt. Also included in the bill: 400 square foot operating rooms, central air, the right of health department inspectors to interview and examine patients, and sharing the floor plans with the fire department with no requirement of confidentiality.
Never mind the fact that abortion providers CURRENTLY operate under what is considered by many to be some of the most stringent regulation in the country. (Ambulatory Gynecological Surgery in Hospitals and Clinics Regulations, the Abortion Control Act, the MCARE Act, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and OSHA regulations.) There is currently a 16 page checklist for ensuring compliance with the law.
Bigger elevators! Roomy operating rooms! Creepy, non-doctors with their nose in your business! Potential security nightmares! THAT will surely keep women safe!
If you are scratching your head and feeling confused, you are not alone.
The new regulations are little short of a ridiculous, reactionary action that would drive up the cost of abortion by an average of 400% and dramatically reduce the ability for women to have access to safe abortions.
One of the victims of the Gosnell tragedy herself testified that she sought out and received services at Gosnell’s clinic because she could not afford the cost of an abortion at a safe, legal provider like Planned Parenthood.
So OBVIOUSLY it makes sense to respond by making MORE regulations what will make it EVEN HARDER to obtain a SAFE, LEGAL abortion.
Or not.
Help us avoid a tragic public health crisis. Stand with us in saying, WE’VE HAD ENOUGH!
